Choosing Your Contractor

At Hurst, we understand that your home is one of your most important assets and that is why we want to make sure that you get the best results even if you decide to choose a contractor that is not affiliated with Hurst. Picking the right contractor requires some special consideration and guidelines in order to ensure that you are making the most of your time and money.

  1. Make sure that your contractor is licensed. Licensed contractor are required to take a rigorous exam, which proves that they have the experience and knowledge to do the work that they have been hired to do by you. Furthermore, a licensed contractor will be able to obtain the proper building permits for the work he has been contracted for. Without a license the contractor cannot obtain a building permit. Watch out for unlicensed contractors that use someone else’s license. You could find yourself with an open permit in the future, and the contractor holding the open permit may have little to no knowledge of the work done by the contractor you hired. Most contractors have a specialty license, allowing them to perform only one particular type of work and in only one county in the state. Hurst is a fully licensed State of Florida General Contractor with the ability to complete many of the varied types of work required in the industry today in order for your home to meet the hurricane codes in Florida and in any county in the State of Florida.
  2. Experience in this field will assure you that your shutters will be well installed. Contractors go in and out of business quickly and you want to make sure that the contractor you hire does not end up leaving you without shutters or with badly installed shutters.
  3. Never pay your contractor the full amount of the job at the start. It is common for contractors to ask for a deposit, especially since most of the money in a shutter or window job goes directly to the manufacturer for the material or product itself. However, a deposit should not exceed 50% of the job total cost. Final payment should not be completed until after final inspection and the job is completed in full. With Hurst you can rest assured that our length of time in business, over 50 years, and our dedicated professional attention to details will insure that your product is installed according to the proper standards and that your money is safe.
  4. Go with a trusted contractor! Search the contractor online, do they have a website? Do they have reviews, good and bad? No one is perfect, but what you want is did the contactor solve the problem in the end. Are they in your local phonebook or do they advertise in local publications? A legitimate and trusted contractor is better than a contractor that you cannot find or cross reference.

You have a much better chance of having a contractor that you can trust and the above guidelines will help you in deciding who the right contractor is for you. At Hurst we do all the hard work for you and our affiliated contractors pass all our guidelines. For more information on our affiliated contractors call us at 1-800-327-0905
